How Smarter Packaging Drove 35% Sales Growth—and Eliminated Product Loss
At Material Motion, we believe packaging should do more than hold a product—it should actively improve performance, protect quality, and drive sales. Recently, we partnered with a customer facing two critical challenges: inconsistent retail performance and product loss due to mold caused by insufficient airflow in their existing bags.
What followed is a clear example of how thoughtful design and engineering can transform both shelf appeal and supply chain outcomes.
The Challenge
Our customer’s previous packaging was creating multiple issues:
- Product spoilage from trapped moisture and poor ventilation
- Dull shelf presence that didn’t stand out in retail environments
- Higher costs without delivering performance
They needed a solution that would protect their product, elevate their brand, and ultimately sell more.
Our Approach
We tackled the problem from both a design and functional engineering perspective:
- Retail-Driven Artwork Redesign: We refined their artwork to create a stronger, cleaner, and more compelling visual identity. The goal was simple—grab attention quickly and communicate quality at a glance.
- Matte Finish Upgrade: Switching to a matte finish gave the packaging a more premium, modern look while reducing glare under retail lighting. This subtle shift made a noticeable difference on the shelf.
- Engineered Ventilation System: The biggest issue—mold—required a precise solution. We designed the bag with ¼” punch holes in an optimized pattern to ensure consistent airflow throughout the product.
This wasn’t guesswork; it was engineered to balance ventilation while maintaining structural integrity.
The Results
The impact was immediate and measurable:
- 35% increase in sales driven by improved shelf appeal and brand presence
- Zero product loss—eliminating mold issues seen with previous packaging
- Reduced cost per bag compared to their former supplier
- Expanded partnership—we’ve since developed a full packaging series across all four of their product lines
Why It Worked
This success came down to aligning three key elements:
- Functionality – Packaging that actively protects the product
- Design – Visuals that convert attention into purchases
- Efficiency – Lower costs without sacrificing quality
Too often, packaging decisions focus on just one of these areas. Real impact happens when all three work together.
The Bigger Picture
This project is a reminder that packaging is not a commodity—it’s a strategic asset. When done right, it can:
- Prevent product loss
- Strengthen brand perception
- Increase revenue
- Reduce operational costs
At Material Motion, we don’t just make bags—we solve problems that directly affect your bottom line.
If your current packaging is costing you sales or creating product risk, it may be time to rethink what’s possible.
